Porepunkah 4

Breakfast Time view

This morning we went back through Bright a little way to find some orchards we passed yesterday, they were producing Walnuts and Chestnuts. Although Walnuts are available in many shops I’ve never seen Chestnuts and I wonder where the market is.

We came back into Bright and turned off for Wandiligong to see the Chinese gold diggings. It’s a lovely little town but we were disappointed with the walk, the first adit or mine opening we saw was almost completely obscured by fallen trees and Periwinkle. If we hadn’t known what we were looking for we would have completely missed it. The most interesting part for me was the information provided on display boards, especially the reference to Chinese immigrants coming into Robe and walking from there to the diggings at Wandiligong. We had already seen evidence of that at Salt Creek in SA.

After the walk we called into the pub for some refreshment, I think it must be a popular place in the evenings.

We were amazed by Pines being harvested on precarious looking slopes.

From Wandiligong we went back to Bright hoping to get a nice Shepherds Pie for my lunch but they didn’t have any. The Beechworth Bakery has shops in various towns and we’ve found them excellent. When they couldn’t help with the pie they made me a tasty GF salad sandwich. Alex was after a Ned Kelly pie but had to settle for Pepper Steak instead. We won’t need tea tonight.

After Bright we drove up the Tower Hill track for a look out over the valley. While we were there very black clouds appeared to be moving our way so we headed back to camp to pack up the annexe so it wouldn’t be put away wet.

The black clouds passed us by, we did some laundry before going into Porepunkah to post some cards. The weather has been a bit oppressive and by the time we’d walked in to the town we were ready for another drink.

Now our clothes are clean, the camper only needs to be packed up in the morning then we’ll be off on the road again. Maybe we’ll get a chance to listen to Myf Warhurst, we’ve only seen her on Spicks and Specks before but she has a show on the ABC radio and we enjoy her music and interviews. Her interview with Joanna Lumley was especially good.
