Some places we've been and some places we're going.

Day 45 Hughenden

This was another quiet day. We went to the Discovery Centre to see the exhibits and read information about the fossils and bones of dinosaurs which have been found in the area. The star of the show is Muttaburrasaurus, there is a model of it in the town and a representation of its skeleton in the Centre.

It was interesting to read that there are at least five theories for the extinction of the dinosaurs including a change in the plants growing, the newest ones couldn’t be digested by the dinosaurs used to feeding on ferns and palms.

There was a shearing display and also some pieces of Art in the Centre.

It’s odd walking along the main shopping street because it’s being upgraded and there are virtually no people about, the shops look closed but most are open. We walked around parts of town and I kept searching for slip-on sandals but it seems that thongs are the only type available and you can buy them anywhere from the Lolly Shop to the Hardware Store or Service Station.

Our biggest excursion of the day was the “Basalt Byway” a drive through various stations in a loop from Hughenden. I hoped to see some wildlife but I think everything was elsewhere. There were cattle and surprisingly we saw some sheep, a centre pivot irrigated crop of some kind and a sign on a property owned by a grape growing company.

Tonight as I was walking Fergus around the Caravan Park near the back fence I saw a painted tank we discovered earlier in the day. I had absolutely no idea we’d been so close to the Caravan Park and I suspect going by the direction he drove away from it that the Prado Pilot didn’t realize either.

Our neighbours tonight are an 85 year old woman who uses a walking frame and mobility scooter and her grandson. They have a trailer which is supposed to become Grandma’s bed but apparently she has too much stuff and there is an OZ tent. Campers come in all variety of forms. 🙂
