Day 9 – Cunnamulla

After muesli bars and hot drinks for breakfast our first task for the day was doing the laundry. Lucky we have plenty of “Laundry Dollars”, a perk of Wednesday golf. 🙂

Yeah! We discarded a layer of clothing today. After hanging out our washing between two trees we went in to the Information Centre to find some brochures about The Matilda Way, we’ve decided that will be our route to Karumba. The Centre is situated in a small park with shelter and lots of big Gum Trees which Corellas were enjoying. The statue of The Cunnamulla Fellah is nearby, he’s a character from a Banjo Patterson poem. Also nearby is a relic of the Warrego River punt now replaced by a bridge.

After finding something to eat we drove out to see the Warrego Weir which had water cascading over it and there was some evidence people had camped at nearby ponds.

On the way back we checked out the Warrego Riverside Tourist Park, it’s only 3kms out of Cunnumulla and it was a pity we didn’t know about it before we arrived. It was a gorgeous place, powered sites were mostly drive-through and positioned between rows of Citrus trees. There were with lots of crafty touches about the place. Many places around here have things made from old horseshoes, like hooks for clothes in the shower cubicles or property name signs. There’s an artistic welder around here somewhere or maybe it’s a welder artist.

Walking around town can be interesting, seeing the size of lawnmowers or spotting a brightly painted Police car but walking with a dog in little country town is often not relaxing. There seem to be so many big dogs confined to small yards and annoyed at passersby who come too close to their domain. Sally was a perfect example, she looked and sounded like she’d devour Fergus in a second even if her tail didn’t stop wagging the whole time.

Driving around town we saw so many different types of homes, small cottages, big and small Queenslanders, derelict and immaculate. One thing they all seemed to have was a green “suitcase” near the front boundary I thought it might be a cover for a gas or water meter but the receptionist at the Caravan Park told me she thought only bottled gas was available in town but it was more likely electricity and water meters under the cover. Didn’t sound safe to me.
